Family Involvement

Family
Involvement

Recovery affects more than the individual. At Samarpan, we recognise the important role families and significant others can play in recovery. Where appropriate, and with the client's consent, family involvement can be integrated throughout treatment—from assessment and admission through treatment, discharge planning and continuing care.

Understanding Families

The Fear Underneath the Question

A lot of the hesitation families feel isn't really about whether they're allowed to be involved.

It's a quieter worry: will I be blamed for this, or will I be kept at arm's length because I'm somehow part of the problem.

Addiction can affect the whole family. Our approach is not to blame families, but to understand how relationships, communication and the home environment can support recovery. Where appropriate, we work with families as partners in the recovery process while keeping the client's needs, consent and confidentiality at the centre of care.

Family involvement is approached according to the individual treatment plan. The focus remains on what is clinically appropriate and helpful for the person receiving care, while respecting consent and confidentiality.

The Treatment Journey

Where You Fit, At Every Stage

Family involvement can look different at different points in treatment. Depending on the client's consent, treatment plan and clinical needs, families may have a role before admission, during treatment, at discharge and through continuing care.

01 / BEFORE ADMISSION

Before Admission

With the client's consent, significant others can contribute to the initial conversation and provide relevant information that may help the team understand the situation and plan the assessment.

02 / ADMISSION

Admission

Where appropriate and consented to, families can be kept informed about practical aspects of admission and the arrangements being made, with communication guided by the clinical team.

03 / DURING TREATMENT

During Treatment

Contact and involvement during treatment are based on the client's consent, the treatment plan and clinical appropriateness. This may include consultations, family sessions, education or other structured involvement.

04 / DISCHARGE

Discharge

Where appropriate, families can contribute to discharge planning and preparation for the transition home, including understanding how they can support a sustainable recovery routine.

05 / AFTER DISCHARGE

After Discharge

Continuing care can include practical planning for the transition home and guidance around communication, boundaries, routines and ongoing support for the family where appropriate.

A Common Starting Point

What If They Don't Believe They Need Help?

You can still contact us. A family member can speak with our team about what has been happening, understand the options available and discuss appropriate next steps.

Contacting us does not commit your loved one to treatment.

Practical Support

Helping the Family Prepare for Recovery

Recovery does not happen in isolation. When someone returns home after treatment, everyday routines, communication patterns and the home environment can all influence the transition.

Where appropriate, family involvement can help everyone understand what the next stage may look like and identify practical ways of supporting recovery without taking responsibility for the person's recovery away from them.

SUPPORT

Communication

Understanding how to communicate clearly and constructively can help reduce unnecessary conflict and support healthier relationships.

BOUNDARIES

Healthy Boundaries

Families can explore appropriate boundaries and recognise patterns that may unintentionally reinforce unhelpful behaviour.

CONTINUING CARE

Sustainable Support

Continuing-care planning can help families think about routines, expectations and practical support after treatment.

Keeping the Client at the Centre

Family Involvement With the Client at the Centre

Family involvement is guided by the individual circumstances of the person receiving treatment. Not every family relationship has the same dynamics, and involvement is not automatically therapeutic in every situation.

Our team considers the client's needs, consent, confidentiality and clinical circumstances when deciding what form of family involvement may be appropriate.

The aim is to understand relationships and communication in context and, where appropriate, help create conditions that support recovery.
